Vivacious, candid, deranged, and full of acidic yet poetic wit, with more than a few ballads up their sleeves, the latest from Shanghai DIY genre-smashers Zilu ‘摇滚的代价’ is as bold as they come. Paying its respects to both the pantheon of pop singers from yesteryear whilst trying to figure out his own place among them, it’s a fascinating balancing act between a burdened and carefree punk star and a vulnerable, all-too sincere pop singer. More apt to compare himself to a stray dog, and willing to hand over his phone number to dissatisfied customers, Zilu lets it all hang, yet never loses sight of the power and sway that rock and roll (in whatever form you favor) has on our hearts, finding comfort in its warm rocksteady embrace.

Red & White 红白色 - 浮游记
Indie pop that sneaks up on with its melodic drive and irresistible hooks, Red & White, from Lanzhou, leave quite the mark with their latest LP 浮游记. With elements of new wave, dream pop, and even some of the atmospheric pop music from the 1970s - the three-piece band has a clear idea of what works and what doesn’t - chiseling down their sounds to their basic rhythmic pleasures - never overdoing it or veering too far off the beaten path. In other bands, this might come off as a slight - but it works wonders here - turning every track into some sort of ear worm worth revisiting.

New Pants have been around just about forever - the seminal indie rockers, Modern Sky’s flagship band, have been making music for well over twenty years and though the musical environment around them has drastically changed, they’ve still got it, even as they’ve become more nostalgic and sentimental over time. That notion is ever present in the band’s new EP which finds the band reflecting on the anxiety of modern culture, including their place in it. For better or worse, this is New Pants at their pop punk finest - and while the variety over its tight four tracks may be lacking, there’s no denying their undiluted melodic charge.
